Emmanuel Church, Redditch Church and Community Pastor Role Description
Post: Church and Community Pastor
Location: At, through and from the Ecumenical Centre, Redditch.
Principal role: To serve in, co-ordinate, oversee, and lead development of the pastoral ministry of the church, in so doing supporting and enabling fulfilment of the Church Mission.
The Mission statement of Emmanuel Church is:

Responsible to: The Church Meeting, primarily through a management group and a line manager who will normally be the minister with pastoral charge.
The person appointed will be required to participate in an induction programme to introduce her/him to the church and appropriate community organisations, this being an ongoing process over the first 4 to 6 weeks of taking up appointment.
Specific responsibilities and opportunities:
Whilst what follows includes specific and general areas of activity and responsibility in relation to the pastoral ministry envisaged, it is intended that the role be broad and flexible enough for the Church and Community Pastor to be able to develop the role and area of ministry as they consider appropriate in consultation with their line manager and management group.
There are three broad areas for exercise of pastoral ministry in relation to: Emmanuel Church Members and Adherents
Ecumenical Centre Users (Coffee shop users, centre groups, staff working in let offices etc.)
Wider town centre community (Specific opportunities include NEW college chaplaincy; Town Centre Chaplaincy Team).
1. Oversee pastoral ministry of the church. To this end:
Working with the minister and others to ensure that the pastoral ministry remains and develops as an integral part of the life, ministry, witness and service of the church.
Attend Staff meetings; Strategy group; member of Church Meeting; attend other meetings on occasions as necessary.
Chair Pastoral Team Meeting.
Encourage and facilitate recruitment and appointment of pastoral visitors; Organise for and/or deliver initial and ongoing equipping of pastoral visitors; Co-ordinate pastoral team and its ministry;
Facilitate development of the work of the pastoral care team and the pastoral ministry of the church as a whole.
Encourage house groups and other meetings in the church in so far as it relates to pastoral matters.
Work with the minister and pastoral team in encouraging and enabling others to become church members.
2. Be present and available to offer pastoral care within church family, ecumenical centre and town centre community. To this end:
Visit as appropriate, especially those who are ill, hospitalised and housebound.
Work with the minister to ensure the housebound receive appropriate sacramental provision.
'Drop in' to the coffee shop, centre using groups, offices.
Share in the church’s pastoral ministry to the wider town centre community, working with ecumenical partners as appropriate (e.g. NEW College, Town Centre Chaplaincy, Street Pastors.)
Be an integral participant of the church prayer chain.
3. Share in worship and pastoral offices of the church relating to pastoral ministry as
appropriate. To this end:
Take part in and/or lead services of worship, the level of participation being dependent on whether the Church and Community Pastor appointed is a Worship Leader or accredited preacher.
Work with minister and Children's and Family worker in relation to pastoral offices: Funerals, weddings, baptisms/dedications.
Offering of prayer ministry to and with people after services and at other times as appropriate.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- A practising Christian with an ecumenical commitment and respect for different traditions, styles of worship, Christian experience and of different faiths.
- Experience of pastoral work in a church and community context.
- Excellent listening skills and other gifts appropriate to a pastoral ministry.
- Ability to relate to all ages.
- Ability to work on own initiative, work collaboratively and relate well in church and community contexts, show leadership and communicate effectively.
- Understanding of and commitment to safeguarding young people and vulnerable adults.
- Access to a car and in possession of a valid full driving licence.
Desirable:
- Accredited Local/Lay preacher or recognised Worship Leader
- Basic IT/administrative skills
